Deadpan

A place, person, and object all have a connection with on another. With destinations in mind, the first being Scott Quad, the trees in the location are still bare from the winter. By bringing along flowers, it help bring a sense of familiarity and comfort to Abby at the place where she and her girlfriend spend a lot of time. The other set of images pertain to myself. I find nature to be inspiring and calming. This lead me to the woods behind The Ridges where I am sitting with my sketchbook. Just me and my thoughts.

Intimacy

Every day is filled with Intimate moments. Abby and Anna do not take each other for granted. They sang each other songs on guitar and cuddled until they eventually fell asleep. I tried to capture the intimacy of spending time with someone you love.

Growth & Decay

The Ridges, previously known as the Athens Lunatic Asylum, was established in 1874 and closed its doors in 1993. Renovations began in 2001, after being abandoned for a few years. When building the Ridges, “Doctors hoped that the beautiful surroundings would assist patients in recovering their mental health.” Even after the renovations, the building is over 100 years old and decaying by the day. I was very inspired by Ron Jude when completing this project. In his work, Jude likes to narrow in and hint at the psychological aspect and the memories people may have when looking at his images.

Many of the patients hospitalized within the Ridges suffered from different mental illnesses.I wanted to capture not only the decay of the building but of the patients inside. Many did not get to leave the hospital and are buried in the cemetery next door. My overall goal was for people to see that everything around us is decaying. Natural elements, artificial elements, us as living beings, and more are all decaying by the second.
